A standard for serial communication interfaces connecting data terminal equipment (DTE) to data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). It defines the electrical characteristics, signal timing, and mechanical interface of the connection. This standard specifies voltage levels for data and control signals, with a common implementation using a 9-pin or 25-pin D-subminiature connector.
