Double letter

A single piece of metal type that combines two characters, such as 'ff' or 'fl', to improve spacing and appearance in letterpress printing. This practice, also known as a ligature, prevents awkward gaps or collisions between certain letter combinations. It is distinct from a diphthong, which represents a single vowel sound with two letters.
