Downsprue

The vertical channel in a sand mold through which molten metal flows from the pouring basin to the runner system. It is designed to deliver a steady, non-turbulent flow of liquid metal into the mold cavity. The downsprue's cross-sectional area often tapers to increase the metal's velocity and prevent aspiration of air.
