Stalk
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005605
A refractory tube used in low-pressure casting processes to convey molten metal from a holding furnace into the die cavity. The stalk is submerged in the melt, and a gentle increase in gas pressure on the metal's surface forces the liquid up through the tube, filling the mold from below. Stalks are made from materials like silicon nitride or sialon to resist thermal shock and corrosion from molten aluminum.
