Deadmelt
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001602
A condition in steelmaking where the molten metal has been thoroughly deoxidized, resulting in a calm and quiescent bath without gas evolution. This state is achieved by adding strong deoxidizers such as silicon and aluminum to the melt. A deadmelt is desirable for producing high-quality steel with minimal porosity and inclusions.
