Firesetting

An ancient mining technique involving heating a rock face with fire and then rapidly cooling it with water to induce thermal shock and cause the rock to crack and spall. This method was used to break hard rock before the advent of explosives. Firesetting was labor-intensive and produced hazardous smoke, limiting its modern application.
