Flotsam and jetsam

Debris found floating on the surface of the sea or washed ashore. Flotsam consists of goods lost accidentally from a ship, while jetsam comprises items deliberately thrown overboard to lighten a vessel in distress. These terms are distinct from lagan, which describes goods cast overboard but marked with a buoy for later recovery.
