Aback

Describing the condition of a sail when the wind strikes it on the front surface, pressing it back against the mast or rigging. This situation can occur accidentally during maneuvering or intentionally to slow a vessel. Being taken aback can cause a sudden stop or even a sternward movement of the ship.
