Four-wheel-drive
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002425
A drivetrain system that powers all four wheels of a vehicle, either simultaneously or on demand, to improve traction on slippery or uneven surfaces. Part-time systems require the driver to manually engage the front axle, while full-time systems continuously power all wheels. Four-wheel-drive is distinct from all-wheel-drive (AWD), as 4WD systems typically include a transfer case with high and low gear ranges for off-road conditions.
