Peritrochium
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004230
The wheel part of a wheel and axle, the classical simple machine in which a large wheel is fixed to a smaller axle so that a force at the rim turns the axle. The wheel and axle together were once called the axis in peritrochio and counted among the mechanical powers. A wheel of 30 centimeters radius on a 3 centimeter axle, for example, balances a load ten times the force at its rim in the ideal case.
