Axle load

The total weight transmitted to the rails by a single axle of a railway vehicle, including the weight of the wheels and the axle itself. It is calculated by dividing the total weight of the vehicle by its number of axles, assuming even distribution. Axle load limits are specified for different sections of track, bridges, and other structures to prevent excessive wear and structural damage; a common maximum for North American mainline freight is 36 short tons.
