Axle guard

A pair of vertical plates attached to a rail vehicle's underframe that holds the axlebox in the correct position while allowing for vertical movement. Also known as a hornblock or pedestal, it guides the axlebox as the suspension system absorbs shocks and irregularities in the track. The axle guard maintains the precise alignment of the wheelset relative to the frame, preventing longitudinal and transverse displacement.
