Axle loading

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000356

The process of calculating or the resulting value of the total weight transferred to the track through a single axle of a rail vehicle. This value is determined by dividing the vehicle's total weight by the number of axles, though the distribution may not be perfectly even. Civil engineering standards specify maximum axle loading limits for different classes of track to prevent excessive wear, fatigue, and potential structural failure of the railway infrastructure.
