A safety mechanism, known as a Flight Termination System, installed on unmanned aircraft and space launch vehicles to destroy them in a controlled manner if they deviate from their planned flight path. The system is remotely activated by a range safety officer to prevent the vehicle from threatening populated areas. An FTS typically consists of a command receiver, a safe-and-arm device, and ordnance to rupture propellant tanks or detonate the vehicle.
