Grease

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002637

An oily or waxy substance used to make the image area of a lithographic printing plate receptive to ink. The fundamental principle of lithography is based on the mutual repulsion of grease and water, where the oil-based ink adheres to the greasy image area and is repelled by the dampened non-image area. This process was originally developed using a greasy crayon on a limestone surface.
