Scumming

A printing defect in lithography where non-image areas of the printing plate begin to accept ink, resulting in unwanted smudges or a dirty appearance on the printed sheet. This occurs when the non-image areas lose their water-receptive properties or when the ink-water balance is incorrect. It indicates a failure of the plate's oleophobic properties.
