Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002680
A model designation, originally meaning Grand Tourer Injection, applied to high-performance versions of mass-market cars, particularly hatchbacks. The 'Injection' part originally distinguished these models from their carbureted counterparts, while 'Grand Tourer' indicated a blend of sporty handling and long-distance driving comfort. Volkswagen popularized the badge with the Golf GTI in 1976, and it has since been adopted by other manufacturers like Peugeot for their own performance-oriented models.
