Hacking

A process in masonry where the surface of a stone or brick is roughened or scored with a chisel or hammer. This creates a better key for plaster or mortar, improving adhesion and preventing delamination. Hacking is often performed on smooth or glazed surfaces to prepare them for subsequent finishes.
