Regrate

To remove the surface of old stonework or masonry by cutting or scraping in order to expose a fresh, unweathered face. This restoration technique is performed to clean the stone, remove deteriorated material, or prepare the surface for a new finish. The process involves carefully chiseling or tooling away a thin layer, distinct from simple cleaning which does not remove the original surface.
