Swingle

A tool used in the processing of flax or hemp fibers to remove the woody core (shives) from the fibrous outer layer. This process, known as scutching, involves striking the dried plant stalks with the swingle to separate the usable fibers. The goal is to prepare the fibers for spinning into yarn.
