Rot-steep

A process in textile manufacturing where flax or hemp fibers are immersed in water to encourage microbial decomposition of the pectin that binds the fibers together. This retting process separates the bast fibers from the woody core of the plant, making them suitable for spinning. The duration of the steep affects the fiber quality and strength.
