Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004731
The dezincification of brass, in which zinc is selectively leached out and a weak, porous, mostly copper metal remains. The yellow alloy first turns salmon pink, then reddish and brown as the exposed copper corrodes. The damage develops in mildly acidic or alkaline solutions and in chloride solutions such as seawater, and the name is used mainly for corroded brass musical instruments.
