Red liquor

A mordant solution of aluminum acetate used historically in textile dyeing to affix natural dyes to cellulosic fibers like cotton and linen. It was prepared by reacting aluminum sulfate (alum) with a solution of either calcium acetate or lead(II) acetate. Red liquor was particularly valued for producing vibrant and colorfast reds and related shades when used with dyes derived from the madder root.
