Vitriol

A class of crystalline metal sulfates or the corrosive mineral acid derived from them. The term encompasses compounds like copper(II) sulfate (blue vitriol), iron(II) sulfate (green vitriol), and zinc sulfate (white vitriol), which have applications in metal finishing, etching, and as chemical reagents. Concentrated sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), historically known as oil of vitriol, is a key industrial chemical produced by the contact process or the lead chamber process.
