Chemical engine

An early type of fire apparatus that used a chemical reaction to produce pressurized water or foam for extinguishing fires. These engines typically mixed an acid and an alkali, such as sulfuric acid and sodium bicarbonate, to generate carbon dioxide gas. The gas then expelled the extinguishing agent through a hose.
