Formate

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006990

A salt or ester of formic acid used as a de-icing or anti-icing agent for airport runways, taxiways, and aircraft surfaces. These fluids, such as potassium formate or sodium formate, work by lowering the freezing point of water, preventing ice from forming or bonding to surfaces. Unlike some glycol-based de-icers, formate-based fluids are readily biodegradable and have a lower environmental impact, breaking down into water and carbon dioxide.
