Icing
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002955
The accumulation of ice on the exterior surfaces of an aircraft, occurring when supercooled water droplets freeze upon impact. This phenomenon can degrade aerodynamic performance, increase weight, and interfere with control surfaces and engine operation. Aircraft are equipped with anti-icing or de-icing systems to mitigate these hazards, especially when flying through visible moisture at temperatures near or below freezing.
