Ice dam

A ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof, preventing melting snow from draining off the roof. This blockage causes water to back up under shingles and into the building, leading to water damage to walls, ceilings, and insulation. Ice dams are typically caused by uneven roof temperatures.
