Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004659

A structural timber or beam that supports the roof covering of a building, extending from the ridge to the wall plate. Rafters are arranged in a series to form the roof's framework, transferring loads from the roof surface down to the building's walls. They are commonly made of wood, but can also be steel or engineered lumber, and their spacing depends on the roof's design and expected loads.
