Ice dam

A ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof, preventing melting snow from draining off the roof. The trapped water can back up under shingles and leak into a home, causing damage to ceilings, walls, and insulation. Homeowners insurance policies often cover damage caused by ice dams, but prevention measures are recommended.
