Fluvial flooding

The inundation of land that is normally dry, caused by the overflow of rivers, streams, or other inland watercourses. This type of flooding occurs when prolonged rainfall, snowmelt, or dam releases lead to water levels exceeding the capacity of natural or artificial channels. Flood insurance policies often differentiate between fluvial, pluvial, and coastal flooding events.
