Water that is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic or toxigenic agents, also known as black water. Sources include sewage, rising floodwater from rivers or streams, and water that has been standing for an extended period with microbial growth. The IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration defines this category and specifies remediation protocols, which include removal of all affected porous materials.
