Water quality-based limitations

Restrictions on pollutant discharges from point sources that are necessary to achieve and maintain water quality standards in the receiving water body. These limitations are imposed when technology-based controls are insufficient to protect water quality. They are typically expressed as effluent limits in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits.
