An air pollutant for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS). These pollutants are widespread and pose a threat to public health and welfare. Examples include ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, and particulate matter.
