Storm surge

An abnormal rise in water level generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide. This phenomenon is primarily caused by high winds pushing water onshore and by the low atmospheric pressure of the storm itself. It can lead to extensive coastal flooding and property damage, which is generally covered by flood insurance rather than standard homeowners policies.
