A classification system that categorizes hurricanes based on their sustained wind speed, ranging from Category 1 to Category 5. This scale provides an estimate of potential property damage and storm surge that can be expected upon landfall. A Category 3 hurricane has sustained winds between 111 and 129 miles per hour.
