A widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms. From an insurance perspective, it is a type of convective storm that causes extensive property damage over a large area, similar to that of a hurricane but without the cyclonic rotation. To be classified as a derecho, a storm's wind damage swath must extend more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and include wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h).
