Bituminosulfonate

A water-soluble organic substance derived from the sulfonation of sulfur-rich oil shale distillates. This chemical process makes the oily, bituminous compounds miscible with water, creating a product with surfactant properties. The most common form, ammonium bituminosulfonate, is a topical anti-inflammatory agent known commercially as Ichthammol or black ointment.
