Asphaltane
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000290
A complex, high molecular weight organic compound found in crude oil and bitumen, insoluble in n-alkanes but soluble in aromatic solvents. These compounds are responsible for the high viscosity and dark color of heavy oils and asphalts. Asphaltanes are often considered the most polar and heaviest fraction of crude oil.
