Bitter

A turn of a cable about the bitts, the paired posts on a ship's deck used to hold the anchor cable. The inboard end of the cable, the part that stays aboard behind the bitts when the ship rides at anchor, is called the bitter end. A cable is said to be paid out to the bitter end when nothing remains beyond that point.
