Harpoon fork
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002739
A hay-handling tool made of a long steel shaft with a pointed end and a pivoting barb or toggle, which is pushed into a load of loose hay and lifted by a rope and pulley running on a track under the barn roof. Pulling the rope sets the barb so the forkful rises, and a trip cord releases it over the chosen part of the mow. It was used to unload hay wagons into the loft before balers became common.
