Headboard

A decorative board or sign affixed to the front of a locomotive, typically on the smokebox door of a steam engine or the nose of a diesel or electric unit. Headboards display the name of a specific train service, a special charter, or a commemorative event. Their use is now mostly confined to heritage railways and special railtours, rather than regular scheduled services.
