Headframe

A large structural frame erected above a mine shaft, supporting the hoisting machinery that raises and lowers conveyances such as cages or skips. It provides the necessary height for the hoisting ropes to pass over sheaves and descend into the shaft. Headframes are constructed from steel or reinforced concrete and are a prominent feature of underground mining operations.
