Header

A structural beam installed horizontally above an opening in a wall, such as a window or door, to support the load from the wall or roof above. It transfers the weight from the interrupted studs or joists to the adjacent framing members. Headers are sized according to the span of the opening and the magnitude of the load they must carry.
