Nog

A short piece of timber fixed horizontally between vertical studs in a timber-framed wall. Nogs provide lateral stability to the studs and serve as fixing points for plasterboard, paneling, or other wall coverings. They are typically installed at regular intervals, such as 600mm centers, to meet building code requirements.
