Torsel

A short, horizontal timber or stone block placed at the top of a post or column to provide a wider bearing surface for a beam or girder. It distributes the load from the supported element over a larger area of the vertical support. Torsels are often found in traditional timber framing and masonry construction to prevent crushing of the post.
