Hudge

A large bucket or iron tub used for hoisting coal, ore, or water out of a mine shaft. The hudge was attached to a winding rope or chain and served as a primary means of vertical transport for materials before the widespread adoption of cages and skips. Its capacity varied, but it was a fundamental piece of equipment in early shaft mining operations.
