Whim

A large winding machine, typically powered by animals such as horses or mules, used in early mining operations to hoist ore or water from a shaft. It consists of a vertical axle with a horizontal arm to which the animals are hitched, turning a drum that winds a rope. Whims were common before the widespread adoption of steam power.
