Hot top

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002903

An insulating or exothermic lining placed at the top of an ingot mold to maintain the molten state of the metal in that region. This allows for continuous feeding of liquid metal into the solidifying ingot body, compensating for shrinkage during cooling. Hot tops reduce the formation of pipe defects in cast ingots.
