Pipe
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004328
A shrinkage cavity that forms in the upper central part of an ingot or casting during solidification. This defect occurs because the liquid metal shrinks as it solidifies, and the last part to freeze is often at the top. Pipes can lead to reduced mechanical properties and must be removed by cropping the affected section.
